3Good beginer guitarMar 05, 2011

The AXL Badwater SRO has a great neck. It is worn in maple that allows you to move quickly up and down the fretboard. The rosewood fretboard has a decent grain and produces a rich tone. The pickups are Alnico magnets with a humbucker at the bridge. The humbucker is great. It handles over driven metal, blues and hard rock nicely. The other two pickups produce a traditional strat sound. The finish of this guitar is very unique. It is basically painted Alder that has been distressed and weathered to give a vintage appearance. The hardware has a worn copper feel to it that looks really nice up close.
Unfortunately all looks aside this is really a beginner's guitar. When I bought mine the action on it was incredibly high. I began to lower it and I found out why. Lowering the action on this guitar creates a lot of fret buzz. I had to reset everything to how it had been before to get it to go away. This guitar is also extremely light weight. The body is Alder and slightly smaller then a Korean made Fender. When you go to pick it up, there is not nearly as much heft as you would expect from a guitar that looks as tough as this one. The fret wires also needed some work. They were not trimmed close enough to the sides of the fret board so they had some sharp edges that extended past the sides of the neck. I hit theses with a file and it smoothed them out nicely. Not everything on this guitar fits together quite right. One of the drilled holes in the guitar was off slightly so the pick guard screw doesn't fit flush like the rest of them.
What it really boils down to is that this is a guitar with good pickups for under 200 dollars. Its fun to play but, it has some problems when it comes to fit and finish. If my house were to catch on fire would it be the guitar I grabbed as I ran out the door? No, probably not.
