Description:

This preamp/direct box is so strong and powerful it could only be called the "Tone Hammer"! Based on the respected OBP-3 preamp, the Tone Hammer features fully sweepable midrange frequencies in addition to bass and treble controls. With the Tone Hammer's pristine D.I. you are set for the studio or the stage. To give this tone shaping unit the ultimate flexibility we are introducing our proprietary Adaptive Gain Shaping circuitry (AGS). AGS allows the player to kick in an additional gain structure and EQ with the "stomp" of a button. You can now go from modern slap sounds to vintage or overdriven. 18 volt operation gives the Tone Hammer plenty of headroom to reproduce the most dynamic playing style. Separate "Gain" and "Master" controls allow you to dial in just the right gain structure for any instrument. The Tone Hammer is the essential preamp/direct box for every bassist's tool box. 5beyond my wildest expectationsMar 18, 2010
By Louis E. Sanchez "radiolouis"
I was searching for a preamp to power a new bass rig straight into a Crown PSA 2 back from the day. WOW, it gives me sweepable mid filter, awesome bass, awesome silky highs and a 2nd fuzz sound. Built like a tank. Powered with the ac adaptor and it is quiet as a whistle. A pre/post di out and ground lift switch built in. I have it up high on a music stand next to the music for a horn band I am in. No bending over and I can tailor the sounds on the fly, try that on the floor. My secret weapon to an old school custom rig that blows the doors off of most cabs I play in music retailers. I power a 15" sub with a mccauley subwoofer and a 15" celestion bass for full range. This rig now rocks. Time to buy the Aguilar TLC compressor. Buy with assurance that this thing rocks! Listen to the samples on the website and you'll be surprised. Bye Bye midi.....

5Tone for days.Oct 29, 2010
By jsumbi "jsumbi"
This bass preamp makes every bass in my arsenal sound amazing. From my Fender Jazz 5 to my Squier and Yamaha models (active and passive). I have been playing bass for a year and a half (pretty much an intermediate level player) and if I would have known that a preamp like this could make my tone so sweet, I would have bought it with my first bass. Whatever style you play, finger-style, pick, slap and pop (thump), this preamp will deliver the sweetest tone. I don't have any road experience with it yet, but it seems to be build like a tank.

5Great for a flexible soundJun 04, 2010
By A. Bakke "Bakkster"
I bought a Tone Hammer to replace a DigiTech BP200 Bass Multi-Effects Processor with Expression Pedal which I only used for EQ, preamp, and compression. Even at the expense of losing my compressor (for now), the Tone Hammer is well worth the upgrade. It's a fantastic analog option for those who want pre-amp, EQ, and DI in one, and it sounds great.

The tone controls are simple and powerful. Having sweepable mids are fantastic, as this is where the true versatility and sound shaping comes from. Using standard EQ by rolling off the bass and highs while boosting the mids, sweeping the frequency allows that boost to increase presence, attack, or body. The mid sweep is now the biggest thing shaping my sound, and I love it!

The included DI is also fantastic. It's great to be able to run straight to the board without extra equipment. The DI output is clean, and the box even runs off phantom power through the DI output. That means I don't need to run through 9V batteries, or use a separate DC power supply, which helps both peace of mind and stage clutter.

The AGS gain stage provides good distortion, though not always to my taste. The fact that engaging the AGS also results in a volume boost means I don't change the AGS during a song, as well. I've found that rolling significantly off the highs and boosting low-mids with just a little bit of gain provides good results. I would consider these settings a 'grumpy' distortion tone, a little bit of splat on the attack and slight drive on the sustain. Supposedly, higher gain settings change the bandwidth of the mid-frequency EQ, but by 11-o-clock on the gain the AGS is too harsh for my taste, so I can't comment on it.

Construction is also top-notch. It's rolled steel, has flanges over the cable connection end for protection, and has heavy duty foot switches and knobs. I have no concern that I'm going to accidentally break it, which fits with the Tone HAMMER name.

5Incredibly useful tool for studio or stage.Mar 19, 2012

there are plenty of YouTube videos that give a sample of the Tone Hammer's tonal capabilities so I'll spare you. I will say that this pedal contains several different voices and I have not yet found a bad one.

as far as quality goes, this may be indestructible. made from heavy gauge metal and the knobs/switch seem to be built to last.

if you want a high quality di/eq pedal with a little something extra (ags) then I suggest you give the Tone Hammer a spin.
