As a loyal Line6 user, I knew the UX8 wouldn't let me down. I recently upgraded from the Toneport UX2 to the UX8, mostly because I needed more inputs to record my band (I used UX8 with Pro Tools). No surprise, Line6 totally nailed it. They know what recording guitarists need. This thing has a lot more to offer than just tons of inputs and great preamps. It has SPDIF, phantom power, footswitch and exp pedal jacks (wah-wah etc), plus Gearbox modeling software and Gearbox plug-in with hundreds of totally usable tones. I recorded all my guitar tracks dry while monitoring a processed tone. while mixing, I took my time and found the best tones. very pleased. And no latency!

IMO, for the price UX8 can't be beat. You are getting a ton of great features in a well-designed complete pro rack unit.

4Great hardware, software VST is mediocreDec 02, 2009
By Jeffery Curley
I own the following audio interfaces: MOTU 828 mk2, M-Audio Kontrol, Guitar Kontrol 3, and a Line 6 Tone port UX8. I do alot of recording onto my 2.66GHz Dell Vostro laptop using Ableton Live with a 7200 RPM internal drive and 3GB of RAM running Windows XP.

This is the most versatile and stable unit of all of the above, I am only giving it 4 stars because the Gearbox software isn't as stable as it should be and I had to update the software 3 times before using it and it still has problems.

Guitar Rig 3 and Guitar Kontrol 3 is fantastic however the audio interface only has 2 inputs (both 1/4"). Which is why I purchased this item, well that and my MOTU died (they are shaky Audio Interfaces). After 2 days of using the Tone Port UX8 I've found myself NOT using the Line 6 Guitar Works VST. Even after the many updates required, it has a habit of crashing my PC randomly, so I'm using the Guitar Rig 3 VST with the Line 6 Audio Device. Using "DPC Latency Checker 2.0" I'm getting 500us (micro seconds) of latency when selecting the Tone Port using the provided ASIO driver. Honestly I've never had good luck with Line 6's Gearbox software even running it stand alone, with the Pod XT.

If you ONLY want to record guitar then I'd suggest the Guitar Rig Kontrol and Guitar Rig 3. But if you think you'll need the ability to record 8 tracks at once I highly recommend the Line 6 Tone Port UX8. Also, and I know this isn't what matters, it looks really clean, very sturdy, and the two VU meters are pretty slick.

I see someone posted a review saying they had some popping issues, but having used 4 different Audio Interfaces I think that users set up was to blame not this unit. There's a lot of things you can do to lower your latency and popping / crackling is a common issue with any audio interface. For instance, if you use a lap top make sure you turn off your ACPI Battery management in Device Manager, also set your power settings to Home Office and set all the selections to "Never" turn off (assuming it's a laptop). You can also disable things such as "GoogleNotifierToolbar" and "Apple Mobile Devices" from MS Config to lower your latency.

Also go to Control Panel / System / Advanced / Performance / Settings and select "Adjust for best performance".

Using this I am averaging between 3 and 60us (using "DPC Latency Checker 2.0") when using the normal sound card.

For this price range the hardware alone is worth the $, but you may find the VST software lacking. And Make sure when you install this device you don't plug it in until you've installed and fully updated all the software.

1Worst Customer Supprt... Worst OS Driver SupportDec 11, 2010
By theshowmecanuck
Spotty support for Windows 7. A lot of pops etc. Better with the latest driver, but really, NO POPS is required for ANY recording of ANY kind. And yes, Line 6 has been very, very, VERY slow to respond. They have a driver out now for it, but it is STILL only a 32 bit version that they want you to run on your 64 bit machines. They were the last digital interface company to put out a driver for Windows 7 (and Snow Leopard). It took them more than six months to get one out after the official release; even though Microsoft was giving out free copies of the prerelease of W7 to ensure that companies like Line 6 would have time to work out any issues with drivers ahead of the official release. These guys are clowns. Stay away from them with respect to recording gear.

5Works great for Mac & PCAug 09, 2010

This thing is AMAZING.

You can record up to eight different tracks. Does your snare drum need a little extra reverb? Add it on. Want to distort the bass drum? Sure! Whatever you want to do, do it. It also makes for quick recordings, since you don't worry about having to get the mix exactly right. Just make sure nothing is clipping, record, then mix later.

Also, I've used this on my Mac Mini (2010 model) running 10.6 Snow Leopard and haven't had any problems. I don't know what that other guy is talking about.

1Good if it workedOct 16, 2010

Out of the four computers I tried it one it only worked on one and it still had ground hum issues. If you're willing to take the risk maybe you'll get a good value for your money.
