This is the only Line6 product I have ever purchased and probably ever will. I have never been impressed by Line6 pedals or amps or anything else they make. This distortion pedal, however, is the best of all the distortion pedals I've tested. (DOD death metal, digitech metal master, metal muff w/top boost, boss metal zone, ibanez sm7, digitech gnx/rp series, boss gt 6, line6 podxt live)

Six knobs may seem like it's overdone, but they all have an important part. Three-band eq, scoop on the mid range (you can get SICK tones) gain setting and level. It also has a switch with three different distortion tones. The metal is more of an 80's hair/glam metal sound, it's pretty thin and flat, sounds about like Sonata Arctica.

The pulverize setting is what I mainly use. It's your standard heavy thrash sound, like dragging a concrete block across broken glass. This is where you get your Metallica, Lamb of God, Rammstein, Megadeth, etc. You know, whatever is heavy and sounds like bones breaking.

The insane tone is similar except it takes all the extra high end that's not really adding anything to the sound and sticks it on the bottom. It's extra thick and warm and heavy. I use it for some things but with my setup (ibanez rg1550 prestige w/emg's all around through an old twin triode crate with celestions) it's got too much low end boom to shred. It's fine just for slower Bloody Kisses style elegy type music but not so much Cradle of Filth or Dimmu Borgir thrash.

The general tone is not so much a Line6 tone, it's the tone of your guitar being distorted and then sent through your amp. If you like the tone of your guitar and the tone of your amp you should be fine because the pedal does not override either of them, it just adds on.

Another feature that is very nice is the built-in noise gate. You can turn it off and get all that raw hiss static or you can put it on setting one which takes about half of the extra noise out and quiets it down and the second setting which effectively eliminates all unwanted noise and makes it a little tighter and slightly compressed. Turning the gate all the way on does take off sustain and makes harmonics not as audible, but how long do you need to sustain 8th and 16th notes?

As far as the construction goes, it's solid. It probably weighs about three pounds. I've had mine for a couple years now and I have never had any trouble with the jacks, the switches, or the foot switch. The knobs are a little on the delicate side, they sometimes are a bit loose and wiggly but they haven't broken off or stopped functioning in any way. The battery compartment is under the switch as normal but it's not so bad, you just gotta pinch in the circle deals on either side to get it open. I've got a PSU so I never need to go in there anyway.

I have yet to find a pedal that sounds as good or better (or an amp with on-board distortion for that matter) than this one. There are more out there I haven't tried, I'd really like to try some of the tube distortions and others I've heard of -- Rocktron Metal Planet, Guyatone MM-X Metal Monster, Nady TD-1 Tube Distortion, BBE Crusher High Gain Distortion Pedal, Rocktron Silver Dragon Tube Distortion Pedal, Pigtronix OFO Disnortion -- to see if they've got more of what I want like the Line6 does (or better).

5Not just for metalNov 10, 2010

I got this pedal free with an amp I bought on ebay. I expected it to give out of control, ridiculous amounts of distortion. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that you can roll back the distortion and get some dirt and still keep a descent tone. There are 3 distortions - Metal, Pulverize and Insane. Believe it or not the Insane distortion (IMHO) is the most useful. With the insane setting, I am able to play loud and soft and the pedal responds similarly to a tube amp.

Also, If you like huge amounts of distortion, this pedal will deliver as well - that's just not what I'm into. I guess most people looking at this review want to play metal. If you find yourself owning this pedal and DON'T play metal, you will still find it useful.

4Ultra heavy, screaming distortionDec 11, 2010

One thing's for sure, they definitely got the name right. Line 6 makes some cool products, so I bought this on a whim to try it out. It's a great pedal and if you're playing metal, you'll never need another distortion pedal. The built in noise gates are a really innovative and well-executed idea. I also like how you can switch between 3 different metal tones with the metal - pulverize - insane switch. The EQ's are great too, I love the scoop - you can really make this thing scream, or dial it back and get that thick chugging sound. It does exactly what it's supposed to do.

This pedal is phenomenal. I've been using it for a few years now and it hasn't worn, broke, or lost functionality even remotely.

While the six knobs (Level, Drive, Bass, Mid, Treble, Scoop) are all common in many boxes, the other functions of this pedal set it apart.

First you have three different styles of distortion to choose - Metal, Pulverize and Insane. "Metal" is good for Rock and Roll, British Rock, and Classic Rock as it doesn't over-distort the guitar but still gives that old rebellious sound from the birth of modern music. "Pulverize" is some-what heavier in sound and is good for hard rock style crunch guitar as well as Alt. Rock, Punk, etc. "Insane", as the name implies, produces maddening gain. It is the heavy metal setting. Thrash, Death/Black Metal, NWOAHM, Industrial Metal, etc. Of course, each of the three settings can be adjusted using the Drive, Scoop, and EQ knobs to extract the exact sound you want.

Second is the noise gate. It makes sense to think that a feature (the noise gate) that has devices solely dedicated to that purpose but is included in an otherwise completely different device would not work as well as its solo counterparts. This, however, is not true of the Uber Metal. It's amazing. With three settings (Off, 1, and 2) you can even further make the pedal do exactly what you want. Off, as one would imagine, is sans gate. Feedback, fuzz, echo, it's all there. Setting 1 is somewhat of a choke but still allows for excess noise from the amp (necessary more often than you'd think). Setting 2, my favorite, is a complete choke. With my Marshall Special Edition stack on loud I can pound out the loudest chord as hard as I can, palm mute, and instantly all sound is cut off. You can then even take your palm off the strings and let go completely, still at high volume, and it will continue to remain silent until you start playing again, even when facing the amp up close.

Also, the construction is very rugged. A full grown man can stomp on this thing as many times as he wants, it won't break. Barring, of course, intentional attempts to break it, but in normal use it will remain fully intact and operational.

Five Stars for all of the features, and the three different, but each brutal, distortion options that come right out the box. Only thing I would like to see added is the ability to switch between distortions without having to stop and bend down to adjust (I know, sounds lazy, but it's a pain in the @$$ during live shows).

I'll never waste time on another distortion pedal again.

4Great Pedal! But certainly, not the best!Aug 23, 2009

I went back to the pedalboard after using a Boss GT-8 for a year. In extremely loud band settings, this pedal was hands on better than any sound the GT-8 could make. For direct recording and through headphones the GT-8 was unmatchable. Anyway, onto the pedal...

Pros:
- Superb construction. Used for over a year, stomped on many times, no problems!
- Excellent and very usable noise-gate with two settings. In my band-mate's garage with very bad grounding problems, I had the noise gate at the high setting and was able to manage.
- Can be confidently called a 'high gain pedal'. Actually at loud levels, you'll have to turn back the gain.
- Scoop setting sound incredible. Someone said metallica, arch enemy...you can get all those sounds for sure.

Cons:
- Takes up more real-estate than a standard size boss-pedal.
- Only the pulverize setting was worth using. Even with a mxr 10 band eq and BBE sonic stomp, I could not get any usable tones from the other two.
- Insane settings sounds no where close to what the line6 spider amps sound like. DO NOT buy this pedal if you want to get your amp to sound like your pal's spider. I have a spider and I can attest to the fact!

All these said, when put head-to-head against a stock Metal Zone, the tones produced by this pedal sound far too "digital". Against a Monte Allums mod'd MT-2, there is no comparison. And finally against a Hardwire TL-2, this pedal can sit and collect dust for what I paid for it. After listening to the latter three, this pedal sound far too processed and thin. But its got a great bass response and mid-freq tone shaping knobs. With the right settings, you can still get great sounds out of it. The noise gate is the best part like I already said. You can do all the chugga chuggas with no noise whatsoever. There are many pedals with in-built noise gate, but they cost way too much and not as usable. In short, a great pedal, but certainly not the best!

--Rock on!
