Description:

The elusive vintage MXR Phase 90 guitar pedal is at the top of the list for pedal collectors world-wide. The original version—available from the company's inception to the late 70's—practically defined the classic phase shifter sound, and was heard on everything from hard rock to jazz-fusion and funk hits. The MXR Custom Shop Script Phase 90 brings back the headroom and clarity of the original, along with its ultrawarm and smooth phasing and reduced midrange swell. And the pedal comes dressed in the original orange paint job and script logo, with an LED, direct from the MXR Custom Shop.

Features:

Original circuit design for smooth and lush 4-stage phasing

Same indestructible die-cast housing

Original smooth orange finish and script logo

Vintage phaser sound

Ultrawarm and smooth phasing with reduced midrange swell

5Much better than the standard Phase 90 (stock)Jun 04, 2010
By Steve Bates
Quick background: Sometime in the 80s, I bought a script Phase 90 for $20 (and traded it for about the same, dammit). It was as creamy, smooth, and clean as they say. When I bought an early 2000's Phase 90 a couple of years ago, I was astounded at how harsh it sounded. After a little research, I found and performed the famous R28 mod (and removed C11 and C12), tweaked the trimpot, and it sounded MUCH better.

Curiosity got the best of me recently, and on impulse, I bought the Custom Shop Phase 90 (mine has no LED). Out of the box, it does sound cleaner than my R28-mod Phase 90. It sounds gorgeous clean, and it sounds creamy and smooth overdriven. Please note that I could not compare it side by side with my original script Phase 90 - I only have a couple of old recordings to compare it to, and it held up nicely.

One final note: This pedal is the same exact pedal as the EVH Phase 90 -- surface mounted components and all -- but with a different paint job. The PC Board is the same, and even has the Script switch that the EVH has (but you can't access it unless you take the pedal apart. In that regard, it is a cheaper option for people who don't like the graphics of the EVH, and don't need the ability to switch between script and standard. And it is a *much cheaper* option for people who cannot afford to buy the original script Phase 90. And in my opinion, the original sounded great, but there is a mystique involved that plays with people's perceptions, making them think the original sounds better, when the average guitarist could not tell the difference (not unlike true bypass).

To sum up, though, if you're comfortable trying the R28 mod on a $50 standard Phase 90, I'd recommend that first if money's an issue. I'm not sure that the Custom Shop Phase 90 sounds so much better that it's worth the extra money (I got it for $80, but it usually goes for a bit more than that). That said, it is noticeably cleaner, and I have absolutely no complaints with this pedal. I would recommend it to anyone if the price was right (less than $100).

3Almost really awesomeJan 28, 2012

The sound is nice, in the mix it sounds lush and sexy when I used it on eps and clavs in my band.

2 cons-

No depth control, which I new going in, but it would have been a nice feature to include

and it kicks out a lot of noise when engaged.... while playing especially at stage volume, its fine. But if you just step on the pedal with nothing playing, it throws out a swooshy mess. I'm going to use it sparingly and hopefully remember to kill it before the end of a song.

5Worthwhile Investment for $100Apr 08, 2011

After doing much research, I settled on the MXR Script Phase 90 (versus the Block Logo Phase 90 or Vintage Phase 90). I wanted this effect specifically for the bass part on Ted Nugent's "Stranglehold". Well, let me just say that this little box nailed it! The quality of the resulting effect is excellent; there is little to no added noise, and the tone and timbre of each note is preserved.

I am very impressed with the device's construction. Out of the box w/o a battery, it has significant weight for its small size. The paint job is flawless, and the silk-screened lettering is crisp and without nicks. The control knob has that solid feel to it with just the right amount of tactile resistance, and the foot switch reacts better than expected. Finally, I find that I appreciate the convenience of having an LED indicator more than I thought I would.

Pro piece of gear and pro results: well worth the price!

5Sounds AmazingFeb 14, 2010

This pedal offers a relatively subtle effect, but it adds tremendous depth to your tone, no matter what else is in your rig. Very happy I own this pedal.
