Exceeds expectations.May 29, 2010
By D. Kuraner After spending many hours of searching through Ukes on Amazon, as well as a couple online instrument distributors, I finally settled on this one. Why? First of all, I'm on a budget. Second, I'm not sure how serious this hobby is going to get, although I'd like to think I'll be playing for years to come! Lastly, I went on YouTube and looked up some videos (search for Mahalo U30) of folks actually playing this model, as well as very simple modifications that can be done to make the sound much cleaner. Overall, I'm impressed. All it takes are some small adjustments, a new set of strings (optional - but dirt cheap and easy if you decide to) and a little filing, and you've got a great instrument. Granted, the sound projection/clarity and build quality will never match a more expensive Ukulele, but for now, this will do just fine for a novice like myself (or anyone on a "college budget", haha)! Also, the very simplistic, bright look of the Uke with contrasting dark pieces (tuning keys, neck, bridge, ring around the sound hole) is very appealing to me personally. Changing out the original strings for some black nylons looks striking, especially in this color (yellow).

Good for what it is.Aug 24, 2010

Overall I am happy with my purchase, but my expectations were pretty low. I bought two of these. One for a gift for an eight yr old and the other to use as a beater uke for camping, beach etc. For the price it is an ok value. The strings are garbage and it will take weeks to to get them to stay in tune even overnight. I have not replaced the strings yet but will soon (if the change is dramatic I will update here). Realize that if you get hooked on playing one of these you will want to buy a better instrument soon. I have many ukes and the Lanikai LU-21 is my next cheapest. It comes with Aquila strings and is generations ahead of these in terms of sound and quality for about $35.00 more. Note that the Lanikai UL-21 is considered by many to be a beater uke as well. You may think the Mahalo sounds ok until you listen to a higher quality uke with better strings. If it comes down to budget one of these will start you out strumming basic songs, but pop for some Aquila strings (about $8.00) ASAP. Update 9-5-10. Put some Aquila strings on today and it does make quite an improvement. Much brighter, but still tinnier than my Lanikai. Equipped with Aquila strings this is a serviceable instrument for around thirty bucks.

NiceNov 10, 2010
By Nerd... This Ukulele is a very nice beginner uke. The cost is just perfect about anyone can afford it. It stays in tune. The one problem is the black paint on the fretboard wears off really easily, that is my only problem

Well, I got one of these at Troubadour music in wayne, on for me and one for my friend, for 35 dollars (it came with a gig bag) I play guitar, so I kinda self taught myself how to play, and I'm pretty good, and can actually play the blues, and I can shred. It is green, by the way. It is fun to play, and very light and easy to cary around. It is fairly good quality, although the strings aren't the best out there. So pretty much, just go out and buy one cause its just plain cool.

By Sally Thompson Not only does this little instrument make playing light-hearted music easy, it also makes me smile just to see it!
