amazing ukulele for beginnersFeb 16, 2010

I teach ukulele to elementary school children. I bought 50 of these of all different colors for the first time 5 years ago. The kids used acrylic paint to put their names on them and decorate them. One important note is that ALL new ukuleles go out of tune minutes after they are tuned and keep going out of tune all the time until about two weeks. (Even the best new ukuleles go out of tune a lot the first week.) These ukuleles STAY in tune after a month. Just be patient and keep tuning them. The more times you do it each day the sooner they will keep their tune.
Their tone is actually great even for me to play. You really cannot go wrong. The price another plus.
I did buy some extra strings since now and then the kids overtightened them and they snapped and broke.

For the price, are you kidding?Mar 16, 2010
By Solomon Kane Okay, it's a freakin' $20.00 uke, whadda ya want? These are mass-produced cheap Chinee specials and you can't expect a lot, BUT... They really sound pretty darned good after replacing the crummy strings that come with the instrument (use clear "Nylagut strings from "Aquila", or clear fluorocarbon strings by "Worth") and giving them time (and MANY tunings!) to stretch and settle. The workmanship is as you would expect... you'll probably find a ding or a scratch or two on one of these, and it's a crapshoot whether you'll get one with decent action. However, the funky colors are VERY cool and a lot of fun. The sound on one of these is surprisingly loud and sweeter than you might think, and the intonation is not bad at all. When I bought mine, I got it from a music dealer (and paid 35 bucks for it), but I was able to try out several models until I found one that wasn't bad. If possible, I highly recommend this over a "sight unseen" purchase, as some of these are definitely put together better than others. Either way, since these use nylon strings, it's not like you'll tear your fingers to bits even if the action is a bit high. One of these is a nice, cheap way to see if you want to continue "uking", and when you upgrade to a better instrument, you'll find that you still play your bargain colored uke, and that it makes a groovy wall decoration too! Uke on, cats!

Good valueApr 27, 2011
By Kodack I'm a long time guitar player, first time Uke player.
For the price this is a 5 star item. It is cheaply made but not in such a way that makes it any less fun or less functional. For it's small size and how cheaply it's made it feels reassuringly solid and strong. It went out of tune continuously the first time I played it. There is a lot more string stretching on Uke's than guitars. I stretched the strings several times by hand and re-tuned and it now holds it's tuning as well as a guitar after about an hours playing and re-tuning. The machine heads are very precise and allow for easy tuning although one of them doesn't work as smooth as the others. The gig bag is thin and has no pockets or padding. It might protect the finish but not against bumps or impacts. There doesn't appear to be a sound post installed so all of the projection is done by the back of the Uke and it can become muted if you hold it too close to your body.
In summary it is easily worth $20 and is an excellent starter instrument. In guitar terms this is equivalent to one of those $60 3/4 scale acoustics you might see at Sams Club.
Pros - Looks good - Machine head tuners - Action is correct (no buzzing frets, straight neck) - Comes with an inexpensive gig bag - Lightweight but feels solid in spite of materials and price
Cons - No sustain - Intonation varies too much from string to string - Cheaply constructed - Minor paint imperfections - Glue left on the fingerboard near the frets

One problemDec 28, 2009
By C. Pellerin I just got this ukulele, and I have to say that it is basically perfect- especially for a beginner like me- in every way except one. It looks exactly like it does in the photo, and plays beautifully, but it goes out of tune REALLY quickly. I tuned it, played a little song, set it down for maybe 30 minutes, and when I came back it was totally out of tune. For those who can tune easily by ear, this may not be such a problem, but otherwise it's really frustrating to have to adjust it so frequently. Other than that, it's still a great ukulele for beginners.

Great little uke!Aug 09, 2011
By Krysta Gibson This is a great little uke that is perfect for the beginner, a child, or someone who just has to have another Uke to play. I got it as a gift for a uke player who already has four ukes. She just loves this one, too. It is light, very portable, and most of all fun! Great product for the price.
