Description:

Kalimba. Origin Country: Pakistan. 1.5 lbs. Made by Mid-East.

Rosewood thumb piano, 3" x 5", 8 steel keys. The thumb piano originates in Africa. It is also known as the mbira or likembe. The metal keys are mounted on a wooden box that acts as the resonating chamber. Longer keys have lower pitches and shorter keys have higher pitches. The keys can be adjusted by tapping them in or out to adjust their pitch. Many different tunings are acceptable, according to personal preference. Similar tuning is only an issue when two instruments are played together; then they should generally agree in tuning.

3Nice Sound, But.....May 28, 2011
By Chris
This thumb piano (aka "kalimba") has a nice sound but, like all such instruments, needed tuning before we could play it. Unfortunately, the two screws that hold the key bar down were turned so tightly by the manufacturer that the slots on the screw heads began to strip before I could get them loosened. Only by dint of careful (but forceful) work could I finally get them to move. I had to replace both screws with new ones after I finally got them out. The screws on the tuning bar need to be firm, but not torqued down so tightly that they present this problem. The instrument works fine now, but we were about ready to return it at one point due to this issue.

I got this for my father because of the happy memories of the one we had growing up. It was a father's day gift and with all the other things given to my father, he was so surprised that we (sister and I) remembered him playing it and having so much fun with it. It was awarded to another in the divorce but the memories are still n posession! The product came alot sooner than expected and was given in time for the holiday. Great business and great new memories and smiles. Thanks!

4Very hard to tune.Jan 03, 2011
By Jenne Schrader
I wish this would have came tuned, I spent a very long time trying to tune it how it came and I'm still off on a few keys. The problem is you have to loosen the screws to tune one key and in that you might make other keys out of tune, and you can't test how you did till you have screwed them back on (and that changes the pitch as well)

It's not a big deal, that's why it still gets 4 stars, it's only slightly annoying =p. Once I get it tuned I know I'll enjoy it much more. It makes a nice low sound, and even with the keys slightly out of tune, I can still play some songs by ear.

3Thumb pianoNov 18, 2010

This thumb piano is a nice size for small children. I have purchased it for my 5-year-old son. It is a Christmas gift, so he has not seen it yet. I was a little disappointed with the sound quality... not as "clear" as others I have heard, although it is adjustable. I have not tried to tune it. I think my son will enjoy it as it is a fun, simple way to create melodies.
