4Bestselling student flute succeeded by YFL 211. Affordable quality and reliability. Buy with confidenceDec 14, 2011
By Agogo
"Built like a tank" is someone's quip on the Yamaha student flute and ideal for the younger beginner who is likely to be less careful or have less instrument handling skills. Robust quality ensures it survives the primary school years intact. The tougher nickel silver plated construct suits the younger schoolchild who is less conscious of handling care. (Full silver flute is of a softer material, pliable and more vulnerable to dents/bends, and unless carefully handled or played would be expensive with uneccessarily frequent trips to the repair shop.) Known for its ease of blowing, beautiful tone due to its special CY embouchure cut for students, is an ideal learner flute. Easy and cheap to maintain. Though not ideal, this flute has been known to see a student through to Grade 8 if required. Just that as one advances one's flute needs greater tonal colours and flexibility to handle more rigours and complex requirements found in flutes with higher silver content or advanced design.

It is succeeded by YFL 211 which is also closed hole, offset G but has E mechanism to facilitate a more stable high E.

The design of this 200series flute is essentially identical to that of the higher end Yamaha 300 and 400 series student flutes. Hence some have argued that this is the "best value" flute of the fleet to procure despite being fully silver plated without the solid silver headjoint of the 300s or silver body & footjoint of the 400 flute as it is "essentially" the same flute. Advancing students have merely to replace the headjoint of the flute which accounts for 70-90% of the flute's sound quality anyway.

5* for any beginner, adult or child - ease of blowing and pleasure to learn from
5* in value
5* in cheaper maintenance (closed hole, plated)
3.5* in the long haul due to tonal range, agiliy limitations possibly requiring upgrade for advanced players

Closed hole is the standard for beginners though preferred in Europe. Some ppl however buy open hole and simply plug the holes at tbe beginning and unplug as they advance
Offset G is preferred for the smaller hand as it brings forward the keys to meet the Left middle and 4th fingers - avoiding unneccessary strain and sprain during prolonged play
C foot - is actually preferred for beginners due to a better "balance" and lighter to hold & control for the beginner. B foot just adds one note to the flute but in the process has a limited classical repertoire (unless you play a modern repertoire), is more expensive and heavier to hold/ctrl.

The absence of an E mechanism is not a deal breaker as it a simple donut can be incorporated for a fraction of the cost to facilitate a stable high E. But today more ppl are prefering the E mech or split-E.

When you are uncertain of your child's interest in the flute beyond primary or jnr high, then this instrument would suffice and due to its playability may even sustain the child's interest to go further. If you already are serious about the flute then you may wish to get a better flute to save yourself an upgrade later. Hvg said that, many players even Jethro Tull (fall back to the student Yamaha for home practice in the kitchen) and Michal Hromek's consort have used the student Yamaha in his Celtic Guitar recording which had inspired me/revived my interest in the flute! Hence it's more the flutist and less so which flute that makes it sing. Nevertheless, here it is, this baby (entry level or no), can certainly be made to sing within it's tonal range.

If the price of new is holding you back, then consider a reputable second hand quality flute rather than going for the cheaper gleaming alternative. They may look the same at the beginning but do not sound the same, play the same and within days, weeks, months, the differences show up and you make up for the cost by your trips to the repair shop. Yamaha along with Altus, Muramatsu, Miyazawa and Sankyo are reputable flute makers and their flutes resale hold up for years with problem free playing and great performance. For second hand certainly consider these brands. And a second hand Yamaha is not hard to find. Some ppl price to sell. If you can buy locally or get a teacher along to test it to ensure you pick up the best value you can without the need of repair.

I am not a flute expert, and I bought this as a gift. I definitely liked the price and I hear that the quality is acceptable.
