Great guitar... possibly some color confusion...Dec 16, 2009
By Evan Anderson I just got this guitar 2 days ago... first thing i noticed right away... "It's green..."
Well maybe more of a Turquoise. But a greenish Turquoise. At first I suspected that this was an error in shipping and they just sent me the correct model in a different color. But after inspecting the tag inside the guitar it does say APX500BB (BB - Blue Burst). So yeah... it's not quite as blue as the pictures make it out to be. If that's important to you, there you go. But as far as I'm concerned, it still looks pretty sweet. So I will start there...
Aesthetics - 8/10: It has a very sharp look to it. Excellent glossy finish. The color burst is deep and rich but still reveals the grain of the wood. The sides/back/neck/headstock are all black, with the exception of a slight hint of the burst color on the back of the body and headstock (more noticeable on the headstock). The rosewood bridge and fretboard, coupled with the ivory inlay on the fretboard/headstock emblem and white trim really add some nice contrast. Nice shiny chrome tuners and guitar strap posts. The output jack for the guitar is one of these strap posts. Overall, just a nice looking guitar that seems like it will hold its beauty for years to come.
Craftsmanship/Feel - 8/10: The frets are pressed in well and don't stick up from the fingerboard too far. I have found no fret buzzing anywhere, it's really setup quite nicely. Once I got it in tune, I felt instantly comfortable with it. It felt an a lot like my dad's Gibson acoustic guitar. The electronics... as far as i can tell are nothing to be scoffed at. The tuner functions perfectly... although the symbols were backwards from what I'm used to with the tuner on my amp. The arrows point to where you need to go to be in tune rather than where you are at. The electronics seem to work great, i plugged the guitar into my amp to give these functions a test run. A comfortable setting for a small room for the volume seems to be about 1/3. The EQ is very effective, i was able to add quite a bit of low end to my tone without cranking the low band all the way up. It was actually to the point where i was worried i was going to have an angry neighbor pounding on my door in minutes. The battery compartment is easy to get to.
So at this point, Looks good, feels good... now the most important part...
Tone/Sound - 7/10: I had another nostalgic moment of playing my dad's Gibson acoustic while playing this guitar. But my dad's Gibson being a small body acoustic has the same drawback that this guitar has... weak low end. It has a great tone, it stays in tune and the intonation is excellent so as long as the strings are broken in, any time you pick it up and anywhere you play on it sounds great. It just doesn't have that bassy low end... which is completely compensated for when plugging it in and adjusting the EQ. I will say I'm not a fan of the strings that come stock on the guitar. A lot of squeaking when sliding up and down the guitar... I'm not really a fan of that. I plan on switching them out soon with Elixirs which I've fallen in love with on my electric guitars.
All in all, its just a damn good acoustic guitar for being a shallow body acoustic. The price tag I'd say is appropriate... maybe just a bit high. But Yamaha makes good instruments and I've played some pretty god awful acoustic guitars. This one is definitely up there when the nicer group of acoustics I've played so to pay 300 I'd say is fair.. but i wouldn't go higher.

Excellent Guitar For The PriceJun 25, 2009
By Justin Schneider I purchased a refurbished model from a seller on eBay, and the sound of this guitar really astounded me. Yamaha has a reputation of being a very respectable company for making quality acoustic guitars, and this model is no different.
Visual: The finish on the Oriental Blue Burst is beautiful. My particular instrument has a tiny bit of unfinished wood (and I'm talking tiny) showing near the bridge, but other than that, the appearance is flawless. I particularly like the style of this guitar in that the sound hole is slightly oval in shape and has a nice inlay around it with no pick guard. Kind of makes it stand out from other similar guitars, in a way.
Technical: The fret board is a bit narrower than other guitars I've played, so if you have extra thick fingers, you may have trouble keeping from muting strings unintentionally. It's a slim line guitar, though, so it's very easy to tuck it in close to your body and get your arms around, and it's a great guitar to play standing up because of this.
Sound: When it comes down to it, this is what's most important, is it not? Being an acoustic electric, this instrument is made to be played through an amplifier. Due to its slimmer body, it doesn't really have a very loud or rich sound when you play it by itself. I'm currently in Iraq and without an amp, so I can't confirm how good it sounds with one, but a knowledgeable friend of mine checked the electronics and said he was impressed by how good quality they were for the price. Rest assured, though, it'll still sound great for playing around the campfire or practicing without bothering the neighbors.
Overall: You'd be hard pressed to find a better deal than this for an acoustic electric guitar with such style and great sound.

Great PurchaseNov 30, 2009
By Ddy I purchased this guitar at a standard music store but I recommend this guitar to anyone purchasing online. It's has a crisp sound, and great action, not to mention the built in self-tuner. This acoustic is awesome!
Love the sound, just a little smaller than I expectedMar 22, 2012
By Arthur Warren To start with, as other reviews have mentioned, this guitar is not blue. It's a pretty shade of dark green mixed with blue, but I'm thrilled with the look nonetheless. If you want to see the ACTUAL color, just google this and look for the green guitar. I did, so I wasn't surprised when it showed up and wasn't blue.
The sound is really amazing for a guitar this size (not a full size, but not child size either, seems to be in between). I'm not sure if it mentioned it somewhere, I was just expecting a bigger guitar. That being said, great acoustics and the sound is plenty loud. If anything, it makes holding it and playing it a bit easier as it weighs less.
Bang for your buck - if you ask me, this guitar lived up to the expectations I had for it. If you're looking for a guitar to play professionally and record albums, save up and buy a $1000 guitar (like a Taylor), but if you're on a budget and still want to be able to get a quality tone that you can play in the meantime, or if you're looking to play at smaller shows/church/home, this is definitely worth the $300.
I love this guitarFeb 13, 2012
By benkrawks I absolutely love this guitar. First of all, it's absolutely beautiful. As others have said, it's actually more somewhere between blue and green but it is gorgeous. Now that I've had it awhile I think it actually looks way better in this greenish color than it would in blue.
The guitar comes ready to play, great intonation, no adjustments needed. Don't know what the strings are that came on it but they sound really nice too. The guitar has a build in tuner which is absolutely priceless, it is so quick and easy to change over to all sorts of different tunings. With other guitars I usually wouldn't bother too often because it was a hassle, but this guitar makes tuning almost effortless.
I really can't say enough good things about this guitar, it sounds great amped or not. It is the most beautiful guitar I have ever seen, the glossy look is beautiful. I've had it for almost a year and it is my most prized possession. So, so glad I trusted the reviews on Amazon to guide me to a nice new guitar. You could not find one nearly this nice especially in this price range in a store. Truly a guitar that should really be priced a lot higher than it is. I've played for twelve years and wanted something that sounded a little better, really couldn't have asked for more.
