4excellent for beginner bass playersDec 31, 2010
By pmv "piter_m_visser"
I have been playing guitar for 20+ years and was supposed to be doing that in the new band I am in. But the bassist did not show up so I gave it a go. Liked it more than I wanted to admit and ended up wanting to buy a bass guitar. Not having much money (or choice here in Vanuatu) I ended up with this one. No regrets at all, it is a fine playing and sounding bass guitar. Two volume knobs control which pick ups you want to use, with just enough difference between the 2 to be useful. The neck is a bit wider than on other bass guitars I have played, making it a bit heavier to play for my short fingers but then I am more a guitar player, so I expect to struggle a bit!

Unless you start playing like Billy Sheehan and do lots of string bending, this bass will stay well in tune and will give you lots of value for money. I enjoy it and find myself recording bass lines to (guitar-) solo over and ended up writing some tunes in the process, something I rarely do on the guitar. Jeez, wish I had got myself one years ago!

If I have to mention one small negative: the front pick-up was slanted a bit much giving me little space to rest my thumb on. I adjusted it and now it is somewhat wobbly but has not affected the playing or sound. Ah well, it IS a budget bass so not everything is perfect.

Can't tell you if it is good for many styles, I just play blues and rock.

I doubt you will regret it.

5Excellent bass, low priceJun 15, 2011
By Mentaljack
This is an excellent bass, especially for the price. Has both P & J pick-ups separate volume controls for each, plus a third tone control. Seldom needs tuning. Great 24 fretboard. Light Agatha (sp?) body, but still has a nice tone. I am still a fledgling bass player, so I am not an expert. I play through a Digitech BP200 sound shaper/pedal and Hartke B30 (30-watt) practice amp, so I've never pushed any to the limits. I've read elsewhere that some competent bass players use the RBX170 as their main instrument. Yamaha guitars and basses are well known for their excellent construction and reliability. The RBX170 is no exception.

4Great Lightweight Carryaround BassMay 08, 2011
By Patti Cake "basschick"
I had one of these for years. When I didn't feel like bringing one of my heavier or more expensive basses to rehearsal, I just threw this baby in a gigbag, put it on my back and off I went. Sounds surprisingly good, comfortable to play, and you don't have to worry about dinging it at this price - although I never even scratched it. Great for beginners or experienced players who just want a bass they can bring almost anywhere that isn't expensive and still sounds good.

4Excellent beginner instrument; still good as backup for experienced playersMar 11, 2012

This is the first bass that I bought, a little over a year ago. It's the one on which I have been teaching myself, and I'm proud to own it.

The first thing to comment on is its appearance. When I took it out of the box, I thought it was beautiful; a glossy black, nice shape, and what looks like chrome hardware for the bridge. Even though I'm not very gentle with it, it still looks every bit as good as the day I opened it, aside from some minor scratches. In the sunlight, things such as fingerprints and dust become much more noticeable, but this instrument strikes me as surprisingly low-maintenance. The knobs are pretty cheap-looking (just featureless black plastic), and the tuning heads are plastic, but for the price this is still very nice. Some other reviewers say that this bass is rather light, but it seems about average weight to me.

Next is the technical performance. The bolt-on neck is tapered, and has 24 frets (two full octaves), which is good for someone who uses glissando as much as I do. The frets seem to all be even on mine, and the single-cutaway body lets one reach the highest notes without straining too hard. The pickups are pretty good; their casing is, again, cheap-looking plastic, but I've yet to have an issue with their functioning. Finally, I'm still using the strings that came on this bass, and never had a problem, as they have a fairly good sound and stay in tune quite well.

Third is the sound. Even plugged into a guitar amplifier, this bass sounds pretty nice with a little adjustment of the knobs. It's simple to work; the first knob controls the volume of the P-Bass style pickup, the second controls the J-pickup, and the third adjusts the tone for both of them. Whether played with fingers, picked, or slapped, it sounds good enough. I've had owners of other basses tell me that this one is very hard to slap, but this is actually a good thing, as I've gotten quite good at slapping with it. Also, it's fairly loud even without amplification.

Overall, this is a very good instrument for under $300 USD. Beginners can easily use it to learn, and experienced bassists can use it live or as a backup instrument. I'd certainly recommend it; even more so, the kit version, which comes with a bag, cable, tuner and DVD for only $40 more.
